How can I treat Fibromyalgia?

Here are some common treatments for Fibromyalgia:


  1. Exercise - Your doctor or physiotherapist may advise you to include some form of exercise each day, incorporating aerobic exercise, resistance (strength) training and stretching exercises. Staying active can improve your general wellbeing and counter the narrowing effect symptoms can have on your activities. Additionally, relaxation techniques like breath work or mindfulness can help manage stress.
  2. Talking Therapies - The body can use symptoms of pain to get our attention. In the same way pain can move us to avoid physical harm - like moving our hand away from a hot object - it can also move us to avoid emotional harm. To the body, physical and emotional safety are the same and the same circuits of pain can be used to alert us to emotional dangers. If the way we're using our energy, or responding to life, is deemed unsafe, symptoms of pain can prompt us to change our behaviour. Mental health coaching can help identify emotionally unsafe behaviours and different courses of action to keep us safe.  
  3. Medication - Your doctor may offer you antidepressants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), paracetamol, and opioids. To help with sleep disturbance, a medicine normally used to treat epilepsy may be offered. 

Can I recover from Fibromyalgia?

Pain is a natural tool used by the body to stop us from being harmed. If the body feels that we're being emotionally unsafe, it can use to pain to say 'Stop! This isn't safe' in the hope we'll choose an appropriate action to meet our body's needs and/or maintain our safety from any unfair treatment.
