Therapy for CFS recovery

About Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), often interchanged with Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is characterized by extreme fatigue or tiredness that does not go away with rest. Like so many mind-body connection conditions, sufferers may not look sick, but can find that their symptoms fluctuate massively - from being able to carry out normal activities one moment, to being bed bound the next.

If the debilitating fatigue isn't enough to deal with, the resulting lack of fulfillment in life can lead to even more symptoms to confront. Help is available to break this cycle and move forward to improved health and energy.

How can I treat CFS?

According to conventional medicine, there is no specific cure for CFS, although some common treatments for CFS include:

  1. Vitamin supplements - According to medical literature, some CFS patients may also have functional vitamin deficiencies, but much more study is needed.
  2. Pacing - Limits are placed on both mental and physical activities, with plans designed to stay within these boundaries. Rest is scheduled between tasks, and activity levels are increased gradually to avoid an energy "crash."
Sadly, pacing can exacerbate the disconnect from the emotional brain, keeping ones stuck in the thinking brain as the pacing plan turns into a strict mental tick-box exercise. Reconnecting with the body - for instance, deciding to turn back from a walk not after "50 steps," but when it feels right - can help rebuild the mind-body connection and restore intuition about your own needs. People who choose this approach often say, "I'm surprised how far I've walked."
  3. Sleep Hygiene - Creating a sleep routine, with consistent times for going to bed and waking up. It's also encouraged to limit or remove caffeine intake and avoid nicotine and alcohol too.

Can I recover from CFS?

Fatigue is not always a call to rest, but possibly a call to action. If the way we are using our energy is not meeting our needs or creating fulfillment, our body can use symptoms of fatigue to get our attention.

Try this: Instead of going straight for a nap when feeling fatigue, try doing something different, enjoyable, fun for just a few minutes and check in with your body to see if you still feel the need to rest. If you discover that your energy levels have improved, then your body is rewarding you for hearing it's call to action!
