How can I treat Depression?

Here are some common treatments for Depression:

  1. Self-help - Confiding in a close fried of relative and talking about your feelings is often encouraged when depressed. General Practitioners may recommend self-help books and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is often funded by public health services. Designed to change unhelpful thought patterns, it can leave some people feeling more frustrated or depressed when the root causes are not addressed and symptoms return.
  2. Physical activity - Staying active can improve you mood by releasing "happy" hormones and chemicals in the body, like endorphins, dopamine and serotonin. Consistency is key and whether it's a simple walk or an intense workout, people have found their stress levels have reduced and benefited from reduced inflammation markers in the body.
  3. Talking therapies - Choose the right therapy for you. Discovery Calls are a great way to meet with a potential therapist to gauge whether you feel safe and comfortable with them. This will also give you an opportunity to ask about costs, how many sessions will be needed, and raise any questions you may have.
  4. Antidepressants -  A doctor or psychiatrist may subscribe antidepressants, most commonly Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). A common concern, from those interested in mind-body coaching, is that antidepressants will make them emotionally numb and unable to detect the emotional signals form their body. This often isn't true and for some, the use of antidepressants has helped them come to a place where they can now benefit from therapy. However, antidepressants can cause unpleasant side affects, which may vary depending on the type of medication. Your healthcare provider will be able to explain these to you when subscribing them.
Note: If you're taking antidepressants, please continue and only change your dosage following the professional advice of your doctor or psychiatrist.

Can I recover from Depression?

The English word depression comes from the Latin depressio(n-), from deprimere 'press down.' If we continually 'press down' our emotions, our body can generate symptoms of depression.

Mind-body coaching provides helpful tools and techniques to reconnect with the emotional wisdom and intelligence your body has to offer. Emotions bring a richness to our lives and we suppress them at the expense of our health. Finding safe and compassionate ways to feel again can lift the burden of depression. Instead of pressing down our emotions, we embrace their insight, giving them the space they deserve and using them to inform our decisions in a way that meets our needs.
